You are going on the road!

One of the reasons why I fell in love with photography is the fact that you can travel all over the world and document your own personal memories. It’s one of the many perks of being a photographer. If you’re a first timer planning your trip on the road and you want to take some amazing images, it can be intimidating at first.

I know how difficult it can be to find ways of bringing your photo equipment with you.

My husband and I have had the pleasure of traveling to many different places and we have been there! So here is a crash course of what to do and what NOT to do when you are taking your photography on the road:

1. Have Your Camera With You At All Times: Whether you are traveling on a plane, in a car or on a bus – a subject will always be a subject and you will be kicking yourself if you don’t have your camera on hand. As a photographer it is your responsibility to document life all around you – so make sure your camera is ready to go!

2. Know Your Lenses: You need to know the difference between your lenses. For example if you want to take a wide angle landscape image, you won’t want to use a 50mm lens (depending on what kind of landscape you want). Also know the difference between an actual camera lens and lens attachments because you will NOT get the same result. Do your research and make sure you have the lens that will get the job done.

3. Charge Your Camera Like Your Cellphone: Believe me, your camera battery will die out quicker then you think. So make sure it is fully charged and ready to go. Also to add to this tip, make sure you have back up batteries on hand. I personally use three but if you cannot afford them yet, just get one backup. It is always better to have two batteries then one.

4. Pack It Accordingly: Look at your calendar and see how long you will be gone for. If you are going to be on the road for an extended period of time, chances are you need a large variety of photo equipment. Which means you’re going to need a bigger boat! However if you are only going away for a week, then a simple carry on camera bag will do. Here is a photo of different camera bags that I use for different trips:

5.Always Be Prepared For The Shot: No matter where you’re going, you already know what type of photographs you want to create. It’s what inspires us to take photos in the first place. So look at your camera bag and make sure that you have the RIGHT equipment that will help you prepare for your perfect shot. This goes back to step 2 in knowing your equipment from your camera body to your tripod. When I am creating my fine art images I know I have to bring not only my camera gear but props! The more knowledgeable you are with your set-up the more confident you will be…which means the more professional you will become!

As an artist you also must realize that you may not get the perfect shot the first time around because you are so focused on the moment – don’t panic! Keep on clicking that shutter button and you will get some amazing images.

Get out there and take some amazing images – I love to see what you come up with!

Til next time,
